Certaines expressions franÇaises communes du verbe “avoir”
(Some Common French Expressions of The Verb “Avoir”)
The verb “avoir” is commonly used in different meanings, as in the examples given below. The conjugation of “avoir” is given in immersion 23.
1. avoir…. ans (to be …. years old)
Bella a quatorze ans = Bella is 14 years old.
Quel âge avez-vous? =How old are you?
2. avoir …. faim (to be ….. hungry)
J’ai faim = I am hungry
L’ enfant a faim = The child is hungry.
3. avoir…. soif (to be …. thirsty)
Elle a soif = She is thirsty.
Nous avez soif = We are thirsty.
4. avoir … peur (to be …. afraid of)
J’ai peur des chiens = I am afraid of dogs.
Elle a peur de tonnere. = She is afraid of thunder.
5. avoir …. raison (to be …. right)
vous avez raison = You are right
6. avoir …. tort ( to be …. wrong)
Ils ont tort. = They are wrong.
7. avoir …. chaud (to be …… hot)
J’ai chaud. = I am feeling hot.
Ce vieil homme a chaud. = This old man is feeling hot.
8. avoir …. froid (to be…. cold)
Les enfants ont très froid. = The children feel very cold.
9. avoir …mal (to be… in pain/to hurt)
i. j’ai mal. = I am in pain/I am hurt
ii. Où avez-vous mal? =Where does it hurt?
iii. J’ai de l’hypertension =I have high blood pressure.
iv. j'ai mal à la tête = I have headache.
10. avoir …. la chance de (to be…. lucky to)
Il a la chance d’être ici = He is lucky to be here.
11. avoir …. l’habitude de (to be ….accustomed to)
Ils ont l’habitude de marche. = They are accustomed to walking/ They usually walk.
12. avoir … l’intention de (to intend to)
il a l’intention de travailler dur. = He intends to work hard.
13. avoir ---sommeil ( to be ----- sleepy)
J’ ai sommeil = I am sleepy.
