Negative statements

Rule to form negative statements

1. To convert a positive statement into a negative form “ne….pas” is inserted. “ne” (nuh) is placed in front of the conjugated verb and “pas”(pah) is placed after the conjugated verb.

2. If the verb begins with a vowel or ‘h’ mute then use “ n’ ” instead of “ne”.

Positive Statements	Negative statements
1. Je comprends français (zhuh kohN prahN frahN-seh) = I understand French.	Je ne comprends pas français. (zhuhn kohN prahN pah frahN- seh) = I don’t understand French.
2. Je vais à London. (zhuh veh ah lohN-dohn) = I am going to London.	Je ne vais pas à London. (zhuhn veh pah ah lohN-dohn) = I am not going to London.
3. Je suis médecin. (zhuh swee meyd-sahN) = I am a doctor.	Je ne suis pas médecin. (zhuhn swee pah meyd-sahN) = I am not a doctor.
4. Tu es vedette. (tew eh veh-dehht) = You are an actress.	Tu n’es pas vedette. (tew neh pah veh-dehht) = You are not an actress.
5. Il est le chef. (eel eh luh shehf) = He is the chef.	Il n’est pas le chef. (eel neh pah luh shehf) = He is not the chef.
6. C’ est un livre. (seht uhN lee-vruh) = This is a book.	ce n’est pas un livre. (seh neh pah uhN lee-vruh) = This is not a book.
7. Elle est la personne. (ehl eh lah pehr-sohhn) =She is the person.	Elle n’est pas la personne. (ehl neh pah lah pehr-sohhn) =She is not the person.
8. Nous sommes étudiants. (nooh sohhm ey-tew-dee-ahN) =We are students.	Nous ne sommes pas étudiants. (nooh nuh sohhm pah ey-tew-dee-ahN) =We are not students.
9. Vous êtes les professeurs. (vooh zeht leh proh-feh-suhr) = You are professors.	Vous n’ êtes pas les professeurs. (vooh zneht pah leh proh-feh-suhr) = You are not professors.
10. Elles sont les victimes. (ehl sohN ley veek-teem) =They are the victims.	Elles ne sont pas les victimes. (ehl nuh sohN pah ley veek-teem) =They are not the victims.
11. C’ est loin d’ici. (seht lwahn dee-see) = It is far from here.	Ce n’ est pas loin d’ici. (seh neh pah lwahn dee-see) = It is not far from here.
12. Le cinéma est en face de l’hôtel. (luh see-ney-mah eh ahN-fahs-duh loh-tehl) = The movie theater is in front of the hotel.	Le cinéma n’ est pas en face de l’hôtel. (luh see-ney-mah neh Pah ahN-fahs-duh loh-tehl) = The movie theater is not in front of the hotel.
13. Je parle français. (zhuh pahrl frahN-seh) = I speak French.	Je ne parle pas français. (zhuhn pahrl pah frahN-seh) = I do not speak French.
